What to Do During a Massage?

Many people worry needlessly. They can even worry about what to do during a massage.

Questions such as these often spring to mind:-

Will the massage hurt?
What if I fall to sleep.. and snore!
What if my stomach makes a noise... or if I pass wind?
How embarrassed they think they would be if any of these scenarios came to pass...

If you are going to a professional massage therapist for the first time, he or she will no doubt be aware that you may have concerns about what you should or not do during your treatment.

He or she would normally go through his massage procedures with you before the session starts so that you can relax and get the most out of your session.

However, so you can be prepared, here are my top 5 suggestions for what to do to get the maximum benefits from what is the most popular massage, a de-stress and relax treatment.

Before the treatment

Go to the toilet. Doing this saves you having concerns about you needing to relieve yourself once the massage starts

Get there in plenty of time. Imagine that your relaxing treatment starts the very moment you leave the house. That way you arrive calm and collected and will be able to go into the treatment room and maximise the relaxing effects of the massage.

Write things down. If you do have any concerns or health problems you feel you need to discuss with the therapist, then write them all down beforehand. It can be easy to forget what to say in the moment of being asked. Having things down on paper gives you the confidence that you will not forget anything. It also ensures that you get your questions asked and answered.
During the treatment

Make sure you are comfortable. You need to be able to relax during the massage and you cannot do this if you are uncomfortable. Change your position on the massage table if you want to. Scratch your nose if it is itchy. Ask to have the temperature of the room cooler or warmer if it is bothering you.. Do whatever you need to do in order to feel comfortable and relaxed. Your massage therapist would much rather you did these things than suffer in discomfort during his treatment.

Do not try to help. If you are having a full body massage the therapist will need to move your legs, feet, arms and hands during the session. Let him do that. Do not try to anticipate where you think he will want to place your limbs because when you do this, you actually stimulate muscular tension. Imagine you are a droopy noodle, lank and limp. Allow the therapist to get hold of you and place your limbs where he wants to. And just enjoy how that makes you feel.
After you have experienced your treatment and the problems about what to do during a massage have been dealt with, you will then be able to fully understand what being relaxed - deeply relaxed - really feels like.
