China Pavillion

Lo mein is a Chinese dish with noodles. It often contains vegetables and some type of meat or seafood, usually beef, chicken, pork, shrimp or wontons. Traditionally this is a variation of wonton noodle soup. The soup is simply separated from the noodles and other ingredients and served on the side. However, the version sold in many places in North America is rather a hybrid of chow mein, though they are prepared differently. Chow mein is stir-fried while lo mein is not fried.[1] Etymology The term lo mein comes from the Cantonese lōu mihn (撈麵), meaning stirred noodles.[2] The Cantonese usage of the character 撈, pronounced lōu and meaning "to stir", differs from the character's usual meaning of "to dredge" or "to scoop out of water" in standard Mandarin Chinese, in which case it would be pronounced làauh or lòuh in Cantonese (lāo in Standard Mandarin).[3][4] In Mandarin, the dish is more typically called bàn miàn (拌麵), not to be confused with bǎn miàn (板麵). American Chinese cuisine In American Chinese restaurants, lo mein is a popular take-out food. In this setting, Lo mein noodles are usually stirred with brown sauce (a sauce made from soy sauce, corn starch, sugar, and other seasoning), carrots, bok choy or cabbage, onions, and shrimp, roast pork, beef, or chicken. Lobster lo mein, vegetable lo mein, and "House" lo mein (more than one meat) are often available. However, in some regions of Western North America such as Vancouver, ordering Lo Mein will result in a ...

Gather The Family For a "Bootiful" Halloween Family Dinner!

They say that by eating at least one meal a day together is critical to a family's success! By doing this, children are less likely to get into serious trouble that beset a lot of families today. Here is a way to make a meal time a lot of fun and one that your kids will be talking about long after Halloween is done!

Here is a recipe for "Dinner in a Pumpkin" that was given to me by one of my favorite aunt's. It has become a family tradition in our home. I have suggested a whole menu and you can adapt it to fit your family's needs. This is our main meal before we start on our house to house adventure for the evening on Halloween!

Back to planning the menu:

Dinner in a Pumpkin, Monster Mash Veggie Dip, Eyeball Appetizers, Pumpkin Sh sped Gelatin Fruit Salad, Scarecrow Cornbread, and Pumpkin Nut Bars.

Dinner in A Pumpkin

1 small pumpkin about 10" across and clean out the seeds

Combine the following on the stove: 2lbs. hamburger, 1 cup chopped onion and 1 chopped green pepper. Drain the grease once it's done Add 1-2 cups cooked rice, 1 1/2 t. salt, 2t. ground oregano, 1t. pepper, 2 cloves garlic, minced, 1/3 cup green stuffed olives, 1 can tomato soup, 3 eggs, beaten, and more salt and pepper. Clean out the pumpkin and put the ingredients inside the pumpkin. Put the pumpkin lid back on the pumpkin. Place pumpkin on a cookie sheet. Bake at 350 degrees for 1 hour. Serve dinner from the pumpkin; and serve cooked pumpkin too! "Frightfully good!"

Pumpkin Shaped Orange Gelatin Fruit Salad

Dissolve a 6 oz. package of orange gelatin dessert, mix in 2 c. boiling water. Add 2 cups of Ginger Ale. You can add a variety of fruit such as mandarin oranges, grated carrots, bananas, fruit cocktail, marshmallows, etc...or just chill it without fruit. Put it in a 1 quart deep bowl and chill it until very firm. Unmold on a plate and decorate with whipped cream eyes, nose, mouth, collar, and hat. Get creative and can use other edible fruit or candies to decorate with. Add long green gumdrop stem. "Bootiful"!

Eyeball Appetizers

Put eggs in a pan of water and boil until done. Once they are cooled, peel and prepare like deviled eggs. Take a small container of red icing and pipe lines through it like veins in an eye. Add a slice of black olive in the middle to give the effect of an eyeball. "Devilish"!

Witches Brew

Apple juice, 1 liter of lemon/lime carbonated drink. Mix the two together and then add some dry ice right before serving time. Watch the fog appear! "Bewitching"!

Monster Mash Veggie Dip

1 8 oz cream cheese 1 T. beef bouillon dissolved in milk 1 green onion, chopped

Mix these ingredients together and add milk to desired consistency and add a little orange food coloring. You can also throw in some chopped olive and chopped celery. Serve with a variety of veggies! "Scary good"!

Scarecrow Cornbread

3 eggs 1 1/2 t. milk 1 1/2 cube butter, melted 3 cups Biscuit Mix 4 heaping T. Cornmeal 1 t. baking powder 1 1/2 cup sugar Orange Food coloring

Beat eggs. Add all other ingredients and mix well. Put into a well greased 11 x 14" pan. Bake at 350 degrees for 30 minutes. Let it cool and cut into squares. Serve with honey butter (tinted green)! It's a scream!

Pumpkin Nut Bars (another family favorite)

1/2 c. shortening 1t. cinnamon 1/2 c. brown sugar

1/4 t. nutmeg & ginger 1 cup flour

2/3 cup pumpkin 1/2 t. soda 2 eggs 1/2 t. baking powder 1 t. vanilla 1/2 c. chopped nuts

Mix all ingredients well together. Bake in a 9 x 13" pan at 350 degrees for 20 to 25 minutes. Frost with powdered sugar, margarine, and orange juice. Sprinkle black and orange sprinkles on top! "Mummy Yummy"!

So try your hand at this fun Halloween family dinner. Surprise your family with a new tradition and see if they don't request this dinner again next year. Plan some fun games at the dinner table or come up with some Halloween jokes to share. Prepare your kiddos for the night's festivities by first filling their tummies with lots of these yummies!

Don't forget to make your table look appetizing with some Halloween decor along with your festive food. Your family will be glad you took the time to celebrate a Happy Halloween with them!

Fabulous and Affordable Family BBQ

Nothing says summer like a tasty BBQ with the kids. Finger-licking ribs, freshly made salads and slaws, tangy lemonade, and decadent desserts make a great meal at home, at the park, or at your favorite family barbecue restaurant. Summer is the time for NASCAR, Little League, and reunions. It also means that the kids are out of school and under your feet more often than not, making a trip to your favorite BBQ restaurant all that much more appealing.

BBQ can also be a healthy dinner for the whole gang. Fresh ingredients, cooked to order meats, and plenty of good conversation all make for a healthy dinner. Too often, eating dinner at home results in everyone sitting in front of the television. Eating out may be just what is needed to get back into the habit of good old-fashioned conversation. Kids and teens who talk and eat with their parents are far less likely to get into trouble elsewhere.

Why Go Out For Dinner?

After working in the house all day, many Mom's love the idea of a dinner out. This is especially true as the weather heats up. Adding to the day's heat and humidity by firing up the stove or oven won't make for a very comfortable night's sleep, either. Mosquitoes, humidity, and too many errands to run can make staying home for dinner the last thing in the world you feel like doing.

Heading for your local family barbecue restaurant can provide you with the break you need and deserve, while getting everyone fed at an affordable price. No muss, no fuss, and nothing to clean up after make this the perfect time to enjoy family dinner specials at your local barbecue restaurant. Eating out at your favorite restaurant can be a special treat, or a weekly tradition.

What's Cookin'?

BBQ nearly always means abundant meat. Pulled pork, beef and pork ribs, barbecued chicken, grilled sausages, and smoked turkey are common menu items. Cole slaw, potato salad, corn on the cob, cornbread, mashed potatoes and gravy, vegetable and dip platters, cheese and cracker platters, fresh fruit, green salads, chicken wings, and chicken tenders can round out any meal at most high quality family barbecue restaurants.

Lemonade and ice tea are the beverages of choice for any barbecue meal, and there are bound to be plenty of family dinner specials that will save you a pretty penny and still provide you with a tasty dessert. Fruit cobblers, brownies, and banana pudding are commonly found at your local BBQ restaurant.

Choosing The Right Restaurant

There are more restaurants in Florida than anyone could possibly count and plenty of them serve great tasting food at a reasonable price. The best advertising is word of mouth, so ask friends and neighbors where they like to go out for family dinner specials and good barbecue. Odds are there's an affordable barbecue restaurant right around the corner, ready to serve you up some lip smackin' good food and a great price.

Electric Pasta Maker - For the Whole Family

Who said that only Italians could make great pasta dishes? If you enjoy cooking pasta, you will love using a pasta machine with an electric motor. Your pasta will be fresh every time you make it and you will be surprised at the difference in the taste. One thing you do want to be careful about; and that is not to buy a cheap machine that will clog up if you add a little too much flower. Buying good quality in anything you buy will pay off in the long run. This is in course speaking of an electric machine.

By doing a little research you should be able to find a good brand name. A company that has been around for a long time and has a good reputation of producing quality machines is key. Most pasta companies carry both the manual and electric models but the price of the electric models makes it very affordable. It may not be the price that is most important in every case. Many people might enjoy making pasta the old fashion way by kneading their own dough, turning the handle, and watching those beautiful noodles churn out. If time is an issue, the electric pasta maker will win hands down every time. The manual machines run about eighty dollars while the electric machines are around one hundred ninety dollars, for those who are more concerned about money.

Recipes can be found easily by doing a Google search, but a simple recipe includes flour, eggs and salt. Working with these ingredients using a fork until you can no longer stir the mixture is the first step. Then you would need to work with the flour by hand before feeding it into the machine. This is just a simply recipe and I am sure you have your own and most pasta machines come with recipes as well. The ladies at my church have created a recipe book and one of our Italian ladies has a great pasta recipe in the book.

You might be surprised to know that many professional chefs us electric pasta machines, but they have fast become a very common house hold product. Children love to watch Moms work with the dough and then feed it into the machines and be amazed as it comes out. One of many nice features of some electric pasta machines is the ability to change the thickness of the dough sheet. You can make round or flat noodles and you can also control the noodle size by rotating the dial for a total of nine different positions. The children enjoy challenging Moms to make different shapes and sizes. Both children and adults love the homemade pasta because it is so fresh.

If you are in the market for and electric pasta machine, be prepared to entertain the family as you prepare delicious pasta meals.
