Smoked Grilled Potatoes

All right, this recipe is to satisfy the many requests I get for side dishes to serve with your BBQ main dishes which are usually meat of some kind. For those that are tired of potato chips or potato salad, I offer you the "smoked grilled potato."

This recipe actually offers two benefits.

The first - you can get a baked potato without making your entire house feel like a furnace from using your oven. This is especially important when you entertain over the summer and don't want to make your inside guests too uncomfortable.

The second - using your kettle grill to smoke the potatoes imparts a very unique flavor to the potato skins and who doesn't love potato skins!

You will first want to wash and dry your potatoes, I prefer russets. Once dry, poke them with a fork several times on all sides. This will keep the potato from rupturing by allowing the steam inside to escape. Next, cover each potato lightly with your choice of Crisco, butter, or bacon grease then lightly salt and pepper. The grease will help your seasonings stay on the potato.

For your charcoal grill, light your charcoal in a chimney starter and place a drip pan in the middle of your kettle grill. Once the coals are hot, divide them on each side of the drip pan. You will then take your choice of woodchips (pre-soaked in water) and place some on each mound of hot coals. Experiment with different wood flavors. You will be richly rewarded because the flavors are really captured in the potato skins. Try Maple, Apple, or Hickory, they are all very good.

Place your potatoes in the middle of your grill away from direct heat. The potatoes should be soft on the inside with a crispy wrinkled skin in about 1- 1.25 hours. If you have larger potatoes that aren't finished in about an hour, you may want to reload your grill with more hot coals. The skins are likely good and smoke flavored by now so you shouldn't need more wood chips at this point.

Serve them as you would normally with your favorite toppings - butter, sour cream, chives - whatever you like.

If you can't pull your self away from the potato salad routine, try cooking your potatoes by this recipe, cut them up and add to your favorite potato salad recipe. Smoked potatoes with a mayo-based recipe are another great twist that will impress your guests and please your family!

The Art of Children's Books

Children's books are not always about the words and the morals. Sometimes children's books are about the illustration.

Contrary to popular belief, most children's book illustrators are actually hired by the publishing company rather than the author of the book. Sometimes this can be upsetting for prospective children's book writers that really wanted to illustrate their book according to their own visions.

Sadly, most publishers have artists they already like to use. So if you are a children's book writer that badly wants to illustrate their own book, you are left with only a few options:

Option 1 - Self publish

It's an incredibly difficult process, but self publishing may be one of the only ways to publish your children's book with your own illustrations. Selling them can be an arduous task, though the internet does provide a way for you to try to sell your story.

Companies that allow you to self publish are available almost anywhere, though they often charge hefty fees in order to allow you to print your work. Often times this method is best when you have a lot of time to dedicate to marketing the book and money to dedicate to its printing. Still, this may be the best option for those that simply don't want to find another provider.

Option 2 - Show the publisher that you are an artist

It may be difficult to self-publish, but it is even more difficult to convince a publishing house that you are both a writer and an artist - especially when they don't know you. When you first send a manuscript, these companies do not want to receive manuscript after manuscript filled with unprofessional illustrations clogging up their mailbox and wasting paper.

But that does not mean it is impossible. If you perfect your images to show these publishers that you truly are the artist meant to take the lead on the work, you can get your work published together. If it is your first time publishing, however, be sure and expect a few extra rejections than you would normally get. The busiest publishers will not even look at a manuscript if it appears that a lot of superfluous paperwork has arrived with it.

Option 3 - Design the templates for the art, but allow the publisher to find the illustrator themselves

Before you assume you are the best person to illustrate the work, consider for a moment: Are you really the best artist for the work? Or do you simply have a vision you want to portray? If it is the former, consider options 1 or 2, but if, like most people, it is the latter - consider drawing out rough sketches of your visions but allowing the publisher to do what they do best. These sketches should be professional, as always, but at least you are not imposing something on the publishing company that they may not be happy with.

Option 4 - Illustrate?

For some people, publishing a children's book is a goal not because of the story, but because of the illustration. In these cases, why not consider sending in samples to publishing companies and becoming just an illustrator instead? If you prefer to paint or draw and children's book storylines are less important, becoming an illustrator is always an option. And, once your foot is in the door, you can always come out with a children's book of your own someday.

These days, "Children's books" have become synonymous with "colorful illustration." Because of this, many people want to publish a children's book with their own illustrations. If this is the case for you, consider one of these three options. You may not get exactly what you want, but you can still be a children's book creator regardless.

Chinese Delicacy - Shark Fin Soup

Usually served on special occasions, shark fin soup can cost up to $100 a bowl. Once desired by Chinese Emperors for its rareness, it is served to signify good fortune. The killing of sharks for their fins have brought protests from animal rights activists and environmentalists.

The soup is a broth with noodle like shark fin strips added for texture. It has minimal nutritional value. It can cause sterility in men when consumed in large quantities due to it high mercury content. It is not recommended for pregnant women and young children.

Annually close to 73 million sharks are killed for their fins. The U. S., Indonesia, Japan, New Zealand, Spain and the United Kingdom are the largest shark killers. This practice is causing some species to be endangered. The preferred species for the soup are Tiger, Mako, Sawfish, Sandbar, Bull, Hammerhead, Blacktip, Porbeagle, Blue and Thresher.

A shark does not reach sexual maturity until 12 to 15 years and has few pups. Most sharks that are caught have not reach sexual maturity. This is causing the decrease in population.

The reduction in the shark population has resulted in their prey to increase. Humboldt squid are stealing salmon from fishermen and cow nosed rays are impacting bay scallop fishing.

Although the fin is valuable, shark meat is not and is usually discarded into the sea. The shark, which is still alive and cannot swim, sinks to the bottom and dies. The U.S, Australia and the European Union has passed laws to control shark fishing. Recently, Hawaii has banned the sale, trade and possession of shark fins.

Hong Kong imports about 50% of the world's shark fins. It is estimated that the market will grow 5% yearly mainly due an increase in demand in China. Some restaurants in that area are now offering a shark fin free soup made from the mung bean. Without control of killing its top predator, the oceanic ecosystem will be impacted.

Astrid Lindgren's Pippi Longstocking

Pippi Longstocking is the well-known character of the Swedish writer Astrid Lindgren. The Pippi stories are well-known everywhere and Lindgren created a lot of books of this eccentric girl and her escapades. The books have written several decades ago.

Astrid Lindgren created a lot of books about this lively person, and she is called in the earliest Swedish versions Pippi Langstrump. The popular Pippi books are Pippi in the South Seas, Pippi after Christmas Party, Pippi goes on Board, Pippi Longstocking in the Park, Pippi on the Run, and the book named simply Pippi Longstocking.

Pippi Longstocking is the person that many boy or girl dreams of being and she lets us see that everything is possible. This imp is a rebel in a positive way and her behavior is sometimes eccentric. Pippi does what she wants to do and all the things to be done her way. Though Pippi is about 10 years old girl she is smart and familiar with a lot of things. But she is a good liar also. There is one thing that a lot of people know about Pippi and this is that this kid is very strong. Pippi can easily lift her horse Little Old Man up from the ground.

Pippi has several good friends but the best friends are Tommy and Annika, the kids in the neighborhood who live near the Pippi's extraordinary and large house, "Villa Villekulla". Of course, Pippi's dear room-mates are her pet animals, a pet ape Mr. Nilsson and her white horse.

This enthusiastic pigtailed girl with mismatched thigh-high stockings is very often shown to be happy and has positive approach although she is getting in trouble. Pippi Longstocking is by no means nasty and understands what is right and what is wrong. Pippi would like to to protect her friends but not like very much some people like the teacher of her friends. But she never means genuine harm to anybody.

Astrid Lindgren wrote the 1st Pippi book in 1945 and all first Pippi films have created long ago. The Swedish performer Inger Nilsson, who was known for her portrayal of Pippi was born in 1959, so she was only about ten years old in those days she acted in the old Pippi films. Lindgren who created numerous famous characters and stories died in 2002 when she was 94. If you are acquainted with Lindgren's life's work you might remember tales about The Brothers Lionheart, Karlsson-On-The-Roof, Ronia The Robber's Daughter, Emil Of Lonneberga, Seacrow Island or The Children Of Noisy Village.

There have been made animated movies of Pippi Longstocking and these films are also good. These animated cartoons are in DVDs and they are entirely different compared to early Pippi movies.

Potato Salads - Three Easy, Healthful Recipes

Potato salads are not just for picnics! They're good year-round, and the variations are endless. Try adding chunks of red-skinned potatoes to just about any tossed salad recipe, or make your own versions of my recipes by adding any other ingredients you like.

I never peel potatoes for salads. The skins of the red ones are pretty in a salad and if you throw them away, you waste their fiber. Just scrub the potatoes with a plastic scouring pad.

Favorite Potato Salad

6 red potatoes

1/2 cup chopped celery

1/4 cup chopped onion

1/2 cup non-fat yoghurt

1/4 cup dijon mustard

2 teaspoon celery seed

1/4 cup snipped fresh dill

Freshly ground pepper to taste

1/2 cup no-fat mayonnaise

Boil the potatoes until just tender, about 20 minutes. Cool and dice. Combine with the remaining ingredients except the mayonnaise and chill at least 30 minutes. Mix in mayonnaise just before serving.

4-6 servings

Green Bean-Potato Salad

1 pound green beans

1 pound red potatoes, preferably tiny baby potatoes

1 red onion, chopped

1 clove garlic, minced

2 tablespoons wine vinegar

1 tablespoon fresh oregano leaves (or 1/2 teaspoon dried)

Freshly ground pepper to taste

1/2 cup no-fat yogurt or mayonnaise

Cut the green beans in 1" pieces and steam until they are crisp-tender. Cut the potatoes into ½" cubes (leave baby potatoes whole) and cook them until they are just tender, about 10-15 minutes. Drain, rinse in cold water to stop the cooking; chill. When ready to serve, toss the potatoes with the remaining ingredients.

4-6 servings

New Potato Salad

For the dressing:

1/2 cup yogurt

2 tablespoons Dijon mustard

2 tablespoons balsamic or rice vinegar

2 teaspoons fennel seeds

Freshly ground black pepper, to taste

For the salad:

1 pound tiny red new potatoes

1 red bell pepper, chopped

2 stalks celery, chopped

1 bunch green onions, sliced (white part)

1/2 cup chopped Italian parsley

Combine the dressing ingredients.

Cook the potatoes in boiling water to cover for about 10 minutes or until just tender. Drain and rinse them with cold water to stop the cooking. If they are larger than bite-size, cut them in halves or quarters. Combine the potatoes with the remaining salad ingredients, stir in the dressing and serve, or chill for later.

4-6 servings

How to Practice Business Etiquette in Japan

The etiquette system in Japan is perhaps one of the world's elaborate. It involves every aspect of one's life, with its strict codes of behavior governing daily etiquette and manners. Although the Japanese mostly adhere to these codes, it is not expected that people visiting Japan be familiar with them and would not be reprimanded. However, making an effort to be polite and to show at least some understanding of local customs can make life in Japan a bit easier.

Hierarchy and social standings - Japanese etiquette is based on a social ranking. For example, "me-ue-no-hito" (or "person whose eye is above") are those of higher social standing such as a top ranking corporate executive, government official, or teacher. Meanwhile, "me-shita-no-hito" (or "person whose eye is below") are those of lower social standing relative to the other person such as a corporate staffer, a government employee, or a student. Older people have higher social standing than younger people, and that the emperor and his royal family are considered "me-ue-no-hito" by all. This hierarchy is evident in speaking, such as the polite speech (keigo), regular speech, and casual speech, as well as male speech and female speech.

The "Giri" - The "giri" refers to one's innate sense of duty, obligation, morality and the absolute need to return a favor. Everyone in Japan is bound by the giri, like a person's bond towards his parents or towards his teachers and benefactors. It is also expressed by meeting one's obligations and responsibilities as best as possible. Meeting the demands of giri is the same as defending one's personal honor even under the most adverse circumstances, which includes taking suicide (for some Japanese).

Bowing - The practice of bowing is basic to Japanese etiquette. It is the way Japanese people greet each other, say farewell, express thanks, and even apologize. The Japanese can be particularly conscious of his or her personal space, which is why bowing establishes a comfortable and respectful distance between two people. Although modern Japanese have become used to the Western "handshake" as a form of greeting towards foreigners, they are very much appreciative when a westerner shows respect by bowing when meeting. The degree of bowing is determined by social status, bow deeper towards a person of higher authority. Typically, a bow is done at about 15 degrees of bending your body towards the front; the longer the bow is held the more feeling it evokes. When bowing as an apology, it must be as low as 90 degrees.

On the street - It is very common to see packs of tissues being given out on the street for free. Rule of thumb is that you should take one, as using a handkerchief for blowing one's nose is a definite no-no. You may also notice some people wearing face masks while walking, especially during spring. Do not worry about an unannounced epidemic. It is just that they are protecting themselves against pollen inhalation. Meanwhile, eating on the street is considered impolite, even if you see people doing it these days. Spitting and urinating in public (mainly by middle-aged or drunk men) may seem obnoxious, but these do not necessarily raise eyebrows in Japan.

Basic table manners - A typical Japanese meal involves many different foods and sauces presented in little dishes. It is considered polite to pick up these small dishes and bring them close to your mouth, especially when eating soup and rice. The soup bowl (usually on you right side) is picked up and the broth is directly sipped from the bowl. Chopsticks are used to pick-up tofu, seaweed, vegetables, and other food items in the soup. The rice bowl (usually on your left side) is also picked up and brought near the mouth, using the closed chopsticks as a shovel. When dipping sauces are used, chopsticks are used to pick up the food, dip it into the sauce, and then you place it on the rice before eating it.

Basic restaurant manners - Upon entering a Japanese restaurant, bars, or inns, guests are given a wet face or hand towel called "oshibori," which is used to freshen-up the face and hands before eating. After using, it is taken away by the hostess. There are no napkins at restaurants in Japan; that is why most Japanese carry handkerchiefs that they use during meals and place it on their laps. If you are having difficulty with using chopsticks, asking for a knife and fork is all right (especially if the restaurant serves Western food). Toothpicks are used in restaurants after eating, and it is all right to pick one's teeth after a meal as long as it is done discreetly.

Slurping - Slurping is a double-edge sword. It is considered impolite, but if you don't do it the chef would be insulted. Consider slurping when eating "ramen" (noodle soup), "donburi" (big bowls of rice topped with meat or vegetables), and on "miso" soup.

Saying grace - Before eating, it is important to say "itadakimasu," which literally means "I shall partake" and serves as a kind of pre-meal grace. You could practice it by quickly saying "eat a duck he must." Once the dinner is over, remember to say "gochisosama deshita" to show your appreciation for the meal.

Drinking - The Japanese may be quiet and reserved, but not when they are drunk. Drinking with fellow students or coworkers is almost a ritual in Japan, and considered the best way to break the ice as well as solidify relationships. However, the Japanese can get pretty rowdy when drunk, but all is forgiven and forgotten the next day. It is polite to pour other people's drinks and then hold your own glass while your host or friend fills it. Upon toasting, remember to shout "Kampai," which literally means "dry glass." If you are invited out, it is common for your host to pay the bill.

Gift giving - There are many considerations in buying a gift for a Japanese person. In Japan, gift giving etiquette specifies when, to whom, under what circumstances, and what type of gift is appropriate to give. Also you should also take note how much the gift costs and how the gift should be wrapped. Traditionally, the Japanese do not celebrate birthdays or Christmas. Instead, give gifts to people you feel indebted to (like a business owner towards his customers, or a patient towards his doctor) during June's Obon Festival (in which the gifts are called "oseibo") and in December before the year ends (in which the gifts are called "ochugen"), not to mention during special occasions like weddings, gradutations among others. When presenting or receiving gifts, it is polite to hold the gift with two hands and bow respectfully at the exchange.

The "Omiage" - Another highly ritualized practice of gift giving is called the "omiage." This is done by thanking someone for an invitation, paying someone a visit, and before and after taking a long trip. For instance, when visiting a friend or acquaintance in Japan, you should bring food items like a baked cake, rice crackers, or a beautifully-wrapped fresh fruit. Meanwhile, when visiting the office of a client, potential business associate, or government official, the omiage might be in a form of tea cups or laquerware and would be more expensive.

Visiting someone's home - If you have been invited to someone's house, remember to bring the omiage. Upon visiting, say to the house owner "Tsumaranai mono desu ga," which is similar to "This is just a little something for you." Before entering, take off your shoes by the "genkan" or hallway and put on the slippers provided by the host. If you have to use the toilet, you would have to change slippers again. Upon leaving, the host would usually say "Kondo asobi ni kite kudasai" or "Please come around my place sometime," but this is only said just out of politeness. Visiting the house unannounced could be embarrassing to both of you.

Business cards - In business meetings, it is customary to exchange "meishi" or business cards but in Japan there is a certain manner of giving and receiving it. Business cards are given and received using both hands and each person bows at the exchange. Take note to present your business card written-side up and facing the person receiving it so that he doesn't have to turn the card around and read it. After receiving a business card, you should read (or look as though you are reading) the card and make comments about the company or the address (it is some sort of "breaking the ice"). In keeping the card, it should be handled with respect and place in a special "business card holder" and not in your pocket or purse. When meeting new people in a conference or dinner setting, you should place your business cards in front of them on the table so that they can easily refer you by name.

Bathing - Communal bathing in Japan dates back for centuries and visiting one of its thousands of "onsen" (hot springs) or "sento" (public bath houses) can be a highlight of your trip. Like in any bathroom, you should wash yourself outside the bath before getting into the hot water and soak. You would notice that people usually scrub each other's backs. Remember to bring your own toiletries and put your shoes and clothes in designated lockers. Bath houses are always separated by sex, but these days there are a few mixed bathing places that you could try.

Messy Tessy

The Muse Book Reviews

Title: Messy Tessy
Author: Leah Orr
Illustrator: Josephine Lepore
Reading Level: Ages 3 - 8
Hardcover: 32 pages
Publisher: Author House, 2009
ISBN: 978-1-4389-9398-0

Leah Orr's book is an enchanting depiction about how kids can become adventurous when they are left alone for a while. Every parent will be able to relate to this story. I know that it really gave me a chuckle because when my niece was really young she was a little bit like Tessy, too.

The story is about a girl, Tessy, who is baby sat by her Aunt Fran while Mom is away at the gym. Aunt Fran comes in and before Tess knows it she is asleep. That is when Tess's fun really starts. She does everything that her Mom always told her not to do, such as scatter all of her toys on the floor, write on the walls, applying Mom's makeup to her face and to all of her dolls. While she was at it...well, I won't spoil it for you but suffice to say she gets into more mischief.

When Aunt Fran suddenly woke up, she went straight to Tessy's room and discovered that there was a real mess that needed to be cleaned up before Mom got home. Aunt Fran bathed Tessy, put all her toys away, and cleaned the walls. When Mom came home she was impressed at how clean Tessy's room was. As Aunt Fran was leaving, Mom noticed something in Aunt Fran's hair and the sock stuck on to the back of her pants. She knew then that Tess was up to something while she was away that was less than admirable.

In addition, Orr's book is wonderfully illustrated by Josephine Lepore, Orr's Mother. The pictures are so realistic and humorous, illustrating Tess's and her Aunt's personality. It is a really funny book, one that both kids and parents won't be able to put down for too long. I can't wait to read it to my nieces and nephews.

What Traits Do Men Look For in Their Future Wife?

Many men are afraid of a lifetime commitment but what is it about a woman that makes him want to take that major leap into marriage bliss? Most likely the answer is knowing that he has chosen a woman that enhances his life, allows him to be himself and inspires him to be the best man he can be. Sounds pretty simple huh? Well, often times relationships flat-line and become habitual because of co-dependency and the loss of that excitement and spark that keeps the juices flowing. When that happens, the man and the woman tend to re-evaluate a lifetime of stagnancy with a partner where the lust is lost and the chemistry is co-put!

So what is hiding on a man's secret wedding checklist? How do you get him from "I do love you" to "till death do us part"? The truth is that there are certain unique qualities and behaviors that he may be looking for in his lifetime mate. So let's check some traits out that make him want to say "I do" instead of "I cannot deal"!

To Nag or Not to Nag...that is the question!

A man does not feel very manly when he is constantly being told what to do or what he has not done right! Many of us women get irritated and consumed with the fact that we have asked for something to get done or for a behavior to be adjusted and unfortunately our wishes are not being fulfilled. Although it is frustrating it can not be the only topic of conversation. Why would your significant other want to pick up his phone if he knows all he is going to get is an ear full about how he still has not booked the plane tickets for your visit to family for the holidays! In fact, he may be feeling resentful of your bossy attitude and that is why he is not doing it! Partners have to be supportive of one another and pick and choose their battles. Sugar gets you further than vinegar and maybe a cute sticky note on his rearview mirror that says, "Hunny, please don't forget to book the flights. You're the best, Love ya" with a red lipstick kiss, is a better way to go! He will think it is sweet and want to get the job done because of the way you ask. Sometimes it is all in the delivery and a lifetime with a bossy drill sergeant is not going to get him to want to walk down that isle! Sugar and support...key components!

Get a Life!

He should have his friends, you should have your friends and then you should have couples you hang out with. A man can tend to feel smothered or lose that longing for his woman if she is constantly available and dependant on him for her entertainment. You want your man to wonder when you are coming over and miss you a little bit. Independence is an attractive quality and one that makes a man continue to vie for your attention. You should always make him feel like a priority but never lose your identity. Have a hobby or interest that you pursue often whether it is an art class, yoga, book club, gathering with the girls and so on. You want to have mutual activities and interests that you share with your partner but you also need to have a sense of self that is for you to explore and appreciate. He will appreciate it for the long term. A life of needy is not attractive but a life of appreciation for you as your own person is appealing.

Be Spontaneous in the Intimacy Department...

Spice it up and keep it exciting! No man is looking for a lifetime of frumpy t-shirts and oversized sweatpants every night of their life! Surprise him with an intimate massage or a bubble bath for two. Keep exploring new ways to explore each other and he will be happy to keep coming back for more! You never want him to think "this is it"? You always want him to think "I wonder what she will come up with next"!

Continue to Surprise him with your New Experiences and Evolution of Self.

Show him and yourself that you are multi-faceted! Take on your bucket list so you can evolve your life experiences and get excited to share them with him! Your excitement will get him excited and he will think of how amazing you are to take on life with zest and adventure. As you explore your many interests he will be seeing layers of you unfold for him to discover. He will get a thrill out of wondering what you will do next and you will feel progressive, stimulated and inspired. It leads to a mutual exhilaration.

In conclusion, men want stimulation, independence and support. They want the nurturing woman who brings them chicken noodle soup when they are stuck in bed with the flu and the adventurous woman who is constantly searching for the next life experience to explore and share with them. All good things in life flow. Notice how a flowing stream has clear crisp water as it grazes the rocks and continues to move compared to a stagnant murky pond that remains still and lifeless. It is the same with relationships, life and love; they all need the energy of the flow to remain healthy and strong.

Adventureland Marbled Spice Cake - A Recipe

At one time or another, we have all had to have our nine-to-five job. Although, we are grateful for the money that comes in, at certain points, we feel bored or maybe even down-hearted. That is when we need to find our escape point. After work, I escape to my kitchen, where I can create and (hopefully) make something absolutely terrific. My escape is even better when I can combine that with my other happy spot, Disneyland.

When I created this cake and finally bit into it, I was whisked away. It was not to some exotic jungle, but to Adventureland. After all, there are some modern conveniences and safety precautions that Disneyland offers compared to some jungles.

This cake took me to that exact spot in front of Bengal Barbecue that I and my family always sit at to watch the world go by. I can feel the roughness of jungle rope, or the feel of climbing into great heights to reach the goal of being at the top of the Tarzan Treehouse (what we once knew as The Swiss Family Treehouse). Adventurous and mystified we sit and take it all in from a chair.

People are walking by, happy, carefree, and excited by that life that has brought them to this beautiful place. I watch the Jungle Cruise where families are coming from while the kids still are laughing at the lame jokes that came from their captain. I look to the right and I see the Indiana Jones Adventure. Kids looked stunned and parents look excited and happy. You wonder if these people look this happy at home. Everyone should look this happy everyday. That's when I look towards the tree house where all the rowdy kids are acting like monkeys and getting out all their energy (at least a third of it).

Sweet and savory barbeque chicken mixed with exotic yet playful spices tantalize my senses. Over the sweet barbeque scent, I detect the smell of dew. That's right, the smell of ancient and green rainforest soaked in its own moisture (it might be the smell of the water from the Jungle Cruise, but I am still going with the rainforest story).

Children laughing and screaming in good natured fun wake me from my fantasy. For a second there I thought I was in a rainforest, but no, I am Disneyland, safe and unscathed, but feeling still very adventurous. The hooting of the tropical birds and the old-fashioned sounds of the skippers' radios complete my happy picture.

Suddenly, I am back in my kitchen with the cake that started it all. Deep, exotic and playful, it matches where I am with that which makes us happy.

For an exotic cake of your own that might bring your sweet escape, try this:

"Adventureland Marbled Spice Cake"*

Ingredients: 1 and ½ tsp baking powder, 1 and 1/8 cups confectioners' sugar sifted, 6 tbs softened butter, 3 tbs non-fat milk, ½ tsp ground ginger, ¼ cup sugar, ¼ cup Splenda, 3 tbs molasses, 1 tsp ground cinnamon, 2 eggs lightly beaten, 7/8 cup all-purpose flour, and a few drops of vanilla extract.

1) Pre-heat oven to 350 degrees. Grease and flour an 8 inch cake pan.

2) Cream the butter, sugar, and Splenda. Beat in the eggs and vanilla.

3) Sift the flour and baking powder together and fold into the mixture alternating with milk until combined.

4) Spoon 1/3 of the mixture into a bowl, and stir in the molasses, ginger, and cinnamon.

5) Drop alternating spoonfuls of dark and light mixtures into the pan. Run a knife through them to get the cake marbled.

6) Bake for 50 minutes. Leave in pan for 10 minutes before turning onto a wire rack to cool.

7) Stir enough warm water in the confectioners' sugar to make a smooth icing. Spoon quickly over the cake. Allow to set.

8) Enjoy with the feelings of your exotic sweet escape.

Animals Rule in Children's Literature - Frogs and Caterpillars and Bears - Oh My!

From very hungry caterpillars and penguins for every day of the year to the Kingdom of Frogavia, animals rule in children's literature. Whether used to teach numbers, colors, or more subtle lessons of morality, animals are the perfect vehicles for conveying tangible and intangible concepts in an entertaining way.

The unique not-quite-human yet not-quite-animal characters in the classic Dr. Seuss tales, paired with allegories about honor and even disarmament, set the stage for the next generation of children's books and entertainment. Endearing creatures from Sesame Street (what is a Snuffleupagus, anyway?) and puppets from Mr. Rogers' Neighborhood created a world of make believe that children could call their own.

In children's literature, the story is often secondary to the lavish illustrations. "The Very Hungry Caterpillar," for example, wouldn't be nearly as compelling without Eric Carle's illustrations. Likewise, "If You Give a Mouse a Cookie" is clever, but Felicia Bond's illustrations make the book a children's classic.

Kristin Zambucka's "Frog Knights" and "Frogavia! Frogavia!" are perfect examples of books that consist of both lavish illustrations and compelling tales. In the first book, frog characters live in their own frog world - the big pond known as The Kingdom Of Frogavia. The true frog king is unseated from his ancient throne and banished to a far, distant pond by an evil ruler. As his bullying and tyrannical rule stretch on, the Frogavian people grow increasingly restless and unhappy. Finally, a group of brave young rebels rise up and go in search of their true king. They eventually find him and he dubs them chivalry frog knights in gratitude for their loyalty. The king, along with a frog queen and frog princesses, return to Frogavia and right the wrongs of the evil ruler. In the second book, the story progresses, with one of the chivalry frog knights asking for the frog princess' hand in marriage, but she marries another. The frog knight joins his friends from the first book to continue on their mission to make good triumph over evil.

Zambucka's books are more whimsical than, say, Mary Pope Osborne's Magic Tree House series or Tony Abbott's Secrets of Droon series, but capture the magic of childhood while imparting nuggets of wisdom. The whimsy and appeal of the characters is that they come from the animal kingdom.

There's no doubt that creatures are central to today's children's literature. Whether completely imaginary, such as those in "Where the Wild Things Are," or real, as are those in "365 Penguins," or a little of both, as in "Frogavia! Frogavia!", kids are captivated by animals that cause the imagination to soar.

Novelty Birthday Cakes - The Themes Are Endless

When you start thinking about themes for Novelty Birthday Cakes the possibilities are truly endless. Making a great cake can really tie the whole party theme together and is literally the icing on the cake, so take some time to brainstorm ideas.

The trick is to really let the creative juices flow and not be intimidated by something that you think might be too hard. There is a way around everything so don't limit your thinking at the start. In reality if the theme you select does seem too hard, there is always likely to be some toppers or props you can buy to put on a beautifully iced cake. This is the simplest, but still highly effective way to make a novelty birthday cake.

So where do you start? The first thing to do is consider the birthday girl or boy. Carefully consider who you are making the cake for and list out all the things they are interested in - hobbies, sports, crafts, animals, flowers, foods, fashion etc. Also talk to them and establish if they are having a party and what the theme is. This could make deciding on cake theme very easy.

Once you have some general information to get started on you can begin to brainstorm ideas for the theme of Novelty Birthday Cakes. Here are a few ideas to get you started:

Girls - Ponies, big cupcake, handbags, jewellery box, princess, fairies, castle, Barbie, flowers, butterflies

Boys - Cars, bikes, rockets, dinosaurs, sport, trains, trucks, fire engines, surfing, skateboards, guitars, airplanes, skull and crossbones, pirates

Unisex - Animals of any type (snakes, frogs, lady beetles, bugs, lions, tigers, monkeys, sharks, horses), birthday numerals, licensed characters (Dora the Explorer, Scooby Doo, Wiggles, Thomas the Tank Engine, Tweety Bird etc), ghosts, farmyards and barns, music, jungle, safari

Women - Stiletto shoes, handbags, patchwork, jewellery, fashion, music, food

Men - Golf, cars, bikes, fishing, computers, games, music, food, sport, football.

The above list is just a start of the many possibilities that are out there. Whatever theme you decide to use can be a starting point for the theme of the whole party or vice versa - fit the cake to the theme of the party that has already been selected.

Think of Novelty Birthday Cakes as something that is going to enhance the birthday experience and add to the occasion. By taking the time to consider the special guest and the occasion, the theme ideas you come up with are likely to be endless.
